found a cool new obsession

and have many cool pix to prove it, except of course I can’t post these until I’m back on home turf.

It’s eco-friendly, colourful, scientific and affirms the value of a traditional women’s craft

and no one would guess, so I’m gonna put you out of your misery and tell:

it’s the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef

at the Scottsdale Civic Center Library through July 11

and arises from a female mathematician’s demonstration of non-Euclidean geometry.  Until she did it, it was believed to be impossible to create a physical model of hyperbolic space.  Once she had produced models, it was realized that these forms naturally occur in coral reefs.

Now I’m neither a mathematician NOR a crotchet-er, but this resonates with me on so many levels.  Will be posting again and trying to network with Victoria people who might be interested.

This counts as baraka – I went to the library to donate the 2 paperbacks I’ve finished since setting on my journey last Friday and replace with more from the book sale, since I only have 1 left.  Having literally spent my bottom dollar on 2 more paperbacks, I noticed a sign pointing to the gallery, so I followed the signs and got to enjoy this awesome MAJOR art installation.

The docent told me that it engages everyone because it’s so colourful.  She’s enjoyed watching schoolkids visit.  Of course there are “Don’t touch” signs all over because the coral is so fuzzy and tactile, you just want to reach out and caress it.  But they didn’t mind photography and the layout was such that you could walk around and experience it from all sides.

Watch this space for more photos soon!

    Very cool, Ruth.
    Thanks for sharing.
This must have been amazing up close.

Do you crotchet? The IFF website has one page that suggests that the hyperbolic crotchet is not that difficult (as it looks) and that beginners can create forms they would be satisfied with.

Beehive has a beginners crotchet class starting on Monday July 13 ~ anyone else want to sign up??
